ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — For the past six years, Sandia National Laboratories and Lockheed Martin have recognized outstanding science teachers through the ESTe Awards (Excellence in Science Teaching). This year, a new program, the Pi Awards, was introduced to recognize outstanding math teachers. The two programs will alternate each year.
Nominations were accepted from Albuquerque Public School’s traditional, alternative, elementary, and middle and high schools. Winning teachers were given a $500 monetary reward. Teachers were selected for their commitment to teaching and for their faith in our youth. The selected teachers are not just educators, but mentors, coaches, role models and good citizens.
Sandia is a National Nuclear Security Administration laboratory.
The six teachers recognized are: Carolyn Chadwell, Governor Bent Elementary; Beth Parker, Cleveland Middle School; Megan Lebleu, Ernie Pyle Middle School; Paula Maxmin, Jefferson Middle School; Debbie Perich, Cibola High School; and Jo Ann Alvarado, Rio Grande High School.
“Good teachers are the indispensable element — the sunlight and oxygen — the foundation on which everything else is built,” says Bruce McClure, Sandia Community Involvement manager. “The Pi Awards were established to celebrate the contributions of teachers and encourage them to continue their outstanding efforts.”
