ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Five Albuquerque high school students have been awarded $2,000 worth of U.S. Savings Bonds as winners of the second annual “It’s the Write Thing To Do” essay contest, sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories and Lockheed Martin Corporation.

The contest is designed to encourage high school students to pursue careers in science, math, and engineering. All 35 essays entered in the contest were from students attending schools in the Albuquerque area.

Challenging questions in areas such nanotechnology and the global position system (GPS) were the focus of the 500-word essays. Sandia technical employees posed the questions and judged the contest.

The five U.S. Savings bond winners were: Noel Kittredge, West Mesa High School; Vince Metzger, Cibola High School; Grace Smith, Del Norte High School; Jane Song, Sandia High School; and Arthur Weagel, Cibola High School.
