Sandia to honor local science teachers

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sandia National Laboratories will hold a banquet to honor recipients of this year’s Excellence in Science Teaching awards (ESTe) Thursday, May 1, at the Embassy Suites & Conference Center, 1000 Woodward Place N.E. The banquet will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the awards presentation at 7:20 p.m.

The bi-annual Sandia ESTe awards recognize the top science teachers in elementary, middle and high schools throughout the Albuquerque Public Schools system.

Nominations for the ESTe awards are submitted to Sandia by APS principals. Teachers who stand out for their superior teaching skills and ability to inspire learning in science are then chosen and presented with a $500 award at the banquet.

This is year’s ESTe recipients are:

  • John Allison – Highland High School
  • Patti Gronewald – Cleveland Middle School
  • Erin Mayer – Wherry Elementary
  • Ana Montoya-Sandoval – Reginald Chavez Elementary
  • Steven McGuinness – West Mesa High School

Winston Brooks, APS superintendent and Dr. Catherine Cross-Maple, deputy secretary, for learning & accountability, will also attend to share of a few words with these top science teachers.
