ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Some of New Mexico’s most brilliant young minds will come together March 7 for the annual New Mexico Regional Science Bowl sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories.

So brilliant, they can answer, in just seconds, questions like:

“What is the biological term most often used for the act of a cell engulfing a particle by extending its pseudopodia around the particle?” Or “Find the mass of 1 mole of cuprous oxide, or Cu2O, assuming the atomic mass of copper is 64 and oxygen is 16.”

Launched in 1991, the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl challenges middle and high school students to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and battle in a fast-paced competition.

During the regional competition in Albuquerque, high school teams from across New Mexico will face off to see who will advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C., in April.

“Sandia is proud to support programs that inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers,” said Deb Menke, STEM education outreach program manager. “The Science Bowl showcases the exceptional talent of students across our state.”
