ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Imagine a future of cleaner, safer transportation and cleaner, smarter electric power that reenergizes America and makes the country more secure.
Media can get a glimpse of that future at Sandia National Laboratories the morning of Aug. 19 when the Labs will showcase its research in energy technologies during Energy Security Media Day.
Media need to RSVP for the half-day event by Aug. 17 by contacting Chris Burroughs at 505-844-0948 or coburro@sandia.gov. Sandia is located about six miles from the Albuquerque airport and has hotels nearby.
“Our work in energy technologies and systems is all about securing America’s energy future,” says Les Shephard, Sandia vice president for Energy, Security and Defense Technologies Division. “Over the past decade we have established strong strategic partners with industry and are seeing our technologies having many practical applications in addressing this most pressing national security concern.”
Among Sandia alternative energy technologies to be showcased are solid-state lighting, combustion research, right-sized (small) nuclear reactors, wind power, photovoltaics, biofuels, battery research and concentrated solar power technologies. Shephard will kick off the morning with an overview of Sandia’s work. That will be followed by a walking tour of the Department of Energy’s National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF) where media will see Stirling Energy Systems’ (SES) new solar power collection dishes — called SunCatchers™ — and a Counter Rotating Ring Receiver Reactor Recuperator (CR5, for short) that, once fully developed, will be able to break carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide and oxygen. This step is critical to making liquid fuels from carbon monoxide and hydrogen. After the walking tour, researchers will describe various technologies and provide current real-world applications in succinct presentations.
Rarely will such a variety of cutting-edge energy research and technology be seen at one time.
National and local media are invited to attend this unique morning packed with science.
