ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sandia National Laboratories Director Tom Hunter today announced the selection of Carolyne Hart as vice president of Weapons Engineering and Product Realization. Hart has been a member of Sandia’s Defense Systems and Assessments Program director team, and most recently served as the director of Sandia’s Electronic Systems Center. She joined Sandia in 1978.

Hart’s appointment comes on the heels of leadership changes announced by Hunter in April: Sandia vice president Steve Rottler was appointed vice president of Science & Technology and Research Foundations; and, vice president Rick Stulen was appointed vice president of Sandia’s California laboratory in Livermore, Calif. Each of these changes become effective on July 10.

“I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Carolyne to the Sandia executive leadership team,” Hunter said. “She is a superb scientist and engineer with outstanding leadership skills. As a member of Sandia’s management team, Carolyne has led many of the Labs’ key research and development activities. Her new role will provide her with even greater opportunities to contribute to our national security work.”

Much of Hart’s career at Sandia has been devoted to work connected with the reliability, safety and security of the nuclear weapons stockpile. She also has provided technical solutions to research and development problems in biomass energy, microseismic and geoelectric methods for oil and gas exploration and subsurface monitoring, and helped lead Sandia’s work in Synthetic Aperture Radar systems.

Hart earned a B.A. in mathematics and biological sciences at Howard Payne University, and holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Oklahoma State University. She is an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico, where she has received the College of Engineering’s Outstanding Teacher Award several times.

Sandia is a multiprogram laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. With main facilities in Albuquerque, N.M., and Livermore, Calif., Sandia has major R&D responsibilities in national security, energy and environmental technologies, and economic competitiveness.
