ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Department of Energy’s Sandia National Laboratories has launched a new website (http://lighting.sandia.gov/) that will offer comprehensive information on semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) — solid-state lighting.

Solid-state lighting is a new technology that is potentially 10 times more energy efficient than an incandescent lamp while providing revolutionary ways to illuminate our homes, offices, and public spaces.

The site covers everything from up-to-date science and technology and business news to a calendar of industry events. Also provided are background articles and updates on the proposed national initiative to accelerate progress in solid-state lighting.

Another feature of the website will be a searchable database of relevant patents — a bonus for those interested in tracking the intellectual property in this field.

The site is sponsored and maintained by an internal Sandia research and development team that is working on solid-state lighting. The goal of the project is to help establish the fundamental science and technology base to replace the country’s primary lighting source, incandescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes, with semiconductor-based solid-state lighting.

Fulfilling the need for a single, comprehensive source of information, the site will be kept current and focused on this fast-paced technology area. For more information and for cross-linking opportunities, please contact Jeff Tsao at 505-844-7092 or jytsao@sandia.gov.

See Sandia’s press release website for more information on Sandia’s LED technology research.
