ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sandia National Laboratories will host Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry and other community leaders at its 2010 Economic Impact Summit on Tuesday, Jan. 11. The summit will highlight the role Sandia plays in the local economy and community.

At the summit, Sandia will release its annual “Economic Impact on the State of New Mexico” report detailing how more than $1 billion spent on goods and services and nearly $1.3 billion spent on salaries and non-contract related payments helped fuel the state’s economy in fiscal year 2010.

Economic impact models estimate the laboratory’s overall effect on the state and local economy is close to $7 billion, or about three times the amount Sandia spends directly on purchases and salaries, according to the report.

Members of the news media are welcome at the summit to receive the economic impact data and listen to the speakers. The summit will be Tuesday, Jan. 11, at the African-American Performing Arts Center (on the New Mexico State Fairgrounds), 310 San Pedro Drive NE. Registration and time for networking begins at 12:30 p.m. The program of speakers starts at 1:30 p.m. Please contact Heather Clark at 844-3511, if you plan to attend or have questions.

The report also provides data on Sandia’s impact on state tax revenues and its successful efforts to attract minority-, women- and veteran-owned small businesses to supply goods and services to the Labs, as well as information on Sandia’s volunteer activities, donations to the community’s nonprofit organizations and support of educational programs.

Sandia President and Labs Director Paul Hommert will speak about the Labs’ economic impact on New Mexico and Don Devoti, manager of Sandia’s Small Business Utilization Department, will review Sandia’s goals and results for small business and supplier diversity in fiscal year 2010.

Hundreds of community leaders and business representatives are expected to attend the event.

In addition to Hommert and Berry, Bernalillo County Commission Chairman Art De La Cruz, Central New Mexico Community College President Katharine Winograd and Albuquerque Economic Development President Gary Tonjes will provide their perspectives on Sandia’s economic impact.

After the speeches, members of the business community and guests will be invited to meet individually with managers and buyers from Sandia’s Procurement Department to discuss business opportunities at Sandia.
