DIAMOND COMBS -- Sandia National Laboratories researchers have created the world's first diamond micromachine in this comb drive that drives a tiny diamond piston. The drive is powered by a tiny alternating electrical current. As the two sets of comb teeth repel and attract each other, one comb slides back and forth. Amorphous diamond reduces stiction -- a combination of stickiness and friction. Use of diamond as a construction material is expected to dramatically increase the durability of the tiny machines, which are about the size of pollen grains.

Earth-bound ‘star’ impersonates black hole, neutron star

November 5, 1999 • ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- In an inconspicuous, flat-roofed building on the high desert of New Mexico, a machine that creates temperatures rivaling those of the sun is helping physicists examine up-close what happens to iron in the grip of black holes and neutron stars.

THE BLACK HOLES AMONG US -- In front of a containment can at the center of Sandia's Z machine, a small window-like frame holds a shining foil containing a layer of mixed iron and sodium fluoride only 500 Angstroms thick, sandwiched between two micron-thick plastic substrates. Just after Z reaches peak power, the iron inside the foils reaches conditions normally only found in the immediate vicinity of neutron stars and black holes, where streams of infalling matter are vaporized by x-rays driven by the immense gravitational power of these compact objects. At Z, a spectrometer measures the absorption of Z's X-rays by the face-on iron foil, and the emission of X-rays from the edge-on foil. Sodium fluoride provides a temperature correlation. The hard data will be used by astronomers trying to understand how extreme conditions affect iron -- a complex element widespread in the universe -- in images returned by Chandra and two other soon-to-be-orbitted billion-dollar X-ray telescopes.
